Curling live from the Winter Olympics: Bruce Mouat’s GB team take on Sweden in the Beijing 2022 men’s final

IOC’s Bach disturbed by pressure on Russian skater
The men of Great Britain take on Sweden in the curling final as they try to finally secure a medal for the British team at this Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics. Bruce Mouat’s side have been impressive throughout the competition but must contend with the experience and know-how of Swedish captain Niklas Edin, whose side beat Great Britain to win gold in 2014.
David Murdoch was Britain’s captain then, but he believes Mouat and his team-mates have nothing to worry about. “Niklas is very experienced, I’ve played against him a lot, as has Bruce. We have nothing to worry about and our recent record against them is really good, we’ve beaten them in the round robin here and twice at the European Championships, including the final.
Britain will go for gold again tomorrow morning too after Eve Muirhead overcame near impossible odds to lead her women’s curling team to the Olympic final in Beijing and fulfill an ambition that threatened to elude her after more than a decade at the top of his sport. Team coach Murdoch estimated his chances of saving victory at ‘less than 10 per cent’ after sending four shots in a disastrous first end to reigning Olympic champions Sweden but they recovered to clinch a victory thrilling 12-11 in an extra end.

Winter Olympics 2022: the alpine team event postponed due to the wind
The last alpine ski race of the Beijing Olympics was postponed to Sunday due to too strong a wind on Saturday.
The windy conditions kept Mikaela Shiffrin waiting for one last chance to win a medal from China.

2022 Winter Olympics: British women head to women’s curling final
Team GB’s women’s curling team beat Sweden 12-11 to advance to the final gold medal game on Sunday.
“I’m pretty speechless at the moment, but what a moment,” England captain Eve Muirhead said after the tight game. She is participating in her fourth Olympic Games.
“It seems incredible to say that we are in an Olympic final. This is the third time lucky. I have already lost two semi-finals and I was desperate. Those moments and those opportunities don’t come around very often,” she said, adding that she was proud of her team.
Team GB will face Japan on Sunday at 01:05 GMT.

Johannes Thingnes Boe wins historic gold
Johannes Thingnes Boe used a short-pitch discipline to hand Norway a record 15th gold medal in a single Winter Olympics when he triumphed in the men’s biathlon 15km mass start on Friday, winning his fourth title in Beijing.
Boe’s mastery of the sport was evident to all as he became the first biathlete to win four gold medals in a single Games since fellow countryman Ole Einar Bjoerndalen in Salt Lake City, with the 28-year-old saying he was all about getting the right lane on the range in Friday’s race.
“Yeah it was tough (conditions) but on the second down (shooting) I managed to get lane one, it’s less windy there,” Boe told Reuters.
Boe was able to secure his preferred lane for the remaining two visits to the range.
“For my standing shot I had less wind so today I was quite lucky with the conditions compared to the chase (race) where I was unlucky,” he said.
Despite four misses on his 20 shots, Boe was able to use his powerful skiing to stay ahead of the pack and win gold.

A mistake costs Verbij dearly in speed skating
Dutchman Kai Verbij had to give up a podium finish on Friday after an awkward change of lane with his pair of skaters in the men’s 1,000 meters at the Beijing Olympics forced him to give in, costing him any chance of a medal.
Paired with Canadian Laurent Dubreuil in the last race, Verbij found himself in a tricky position on a crossover. The world champion respected the rules and held back to let his opponent run ahead.
“I didn’t have enough speed to overtake him at the lane change. I just had to retire because otherwise I would have been disqualified and probably ruined his race,” said a dejected Verbij after finishing last.
“It’s quite sad and I’m quite disappointed that it happened at the Olympics, but yes. Someone has to lose, I guess,” the 27-year-old said.

The IOC criticizes the treatment of Kamila Valieva
International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach has launched a scathing attack on the team behind Kamila Valieva, the 15-year-old figure skater at the center of a drugs investigation that has faded under the global glare of the Games Winter Olympics in Beijing on Thursday evening.
Bach said he was ‘disturbed’ by Valieva’s coaches’ ‘frosty’ attitude as she left the ice in tears after falling twice in an error-strewn performance that took her off the ice first place after Tuesday’s women’s short program to fourth and out of the medals.
Valieva appeared to be confronted by her controversial coach Eteri Tutberidze, who, according to Russian media, immediately questioned why the teenager ‘stopped fighting’ after making an initial mistake on her opening triple axel, and did not didn’t offer the usual hug.
Bach said: “I was very disturbed when I watched the competition on television – when I then saw how she was received by those closest to her with what seemed like enormous coolness – it was scary to see this.
“Rather than comforting her, rather than trying to help her. You could feel that chilling atmosphere, that distance. If you interpreted the body language, it was even worse. It was even dismissive.”
