the Swedish Superseries heads into the second weekend of play on Saturday, April 9 as the Royal crowns of Tyresö, newly returned to top league, welcomes defender Swedish champion Black Knights of Örebro.
the royal crowns last played in Superseries in 2017 but two years earlier in 2015, Tyresö went undefeated in the regular season and was surprisingly knocked out in the semi-finals by Orebro.
The Black Knights are coming off a narrow 26-23 loss last week to the Stockholm Mean Machines in the opener of the Swedish season.
Tyresö enters the game under head coach Carl Haglind with a high level of anticipation. It’s not rookie training that royal crowns gathered with veterans and Sweden team quarterback Phil Juhlin under center. Juhlin also serves as offensive coordinator and was key to the success of the team’s 2021 undefeated season in the lower division and advancement to Sweden top league. Another veteran and Tyresö product starts at running back, Emil Knutsson. Knutsson is definitely a quality fullback. He was the race leader in the top league three years in a row, winning the title with Carlstad in 2020 and with stockholm in 2018 and 2019. The host corps of Edwin Taborda, Niko Peterson, Mattias Gauthier and Dovydas “Dovve” Koncevicius is as good as it gets.
Juhlin is looking forward to the season:
“It’s very cool. It’s the third team I’ve played for in the Superseries and the second time I’ve been able to help a team improve. I was with the Kristianstad Predators in 2013. It’s going to be a year interesting. We will also play the Scandinavian cup. We have the potential to play 13 games in total with all the tournaments. I am really excited about our chances.
defensively, Tyresö recruited linebacker Ali Chakkour from the Medium machines and hooked Sweden team edge rusher Malcolm Engström who last year played for the Potsdam Royals in the German Football League and the year before with the Wicked machines.
For the black knights, quarterback Trevor Vasey leads a powerful unit. Vasey, 6’7″, 220 pounds, 28, threw for 274 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 67 additional yards last week against stockholm and can get things moving with both his arm and his feet. With veteran running backs Tim Göransson and K Wedberg as well as an exceptional receiving corps led by Sweden team wide Johannes Lindeus, who rushed for 99 yards in the season opener last week, Orebro will test the Tyresö secondary.
On defense, the top seven are unchanged from last week and include 6’3″ and 307-pound defensive linemen Tristen Cox, as well as The Swedish team Sebastian Nilsson, along with Martin Jappinen and linebackers Rikard Carlsson, Edvin Jönsson, Josh Murphy and Filip Jönsson. The secondary features Murphy’s other brother, Eric as well as Cewin Eriksson.
