Communications and Digital Economy Minister Isa Pantami has called on the Nigeria Data Protection Bureau (NDPB) to ensure data protection, privacy and confidentiality in the country.

Mr. Pantami made the call during the official launch of the NDPB logo, website and core values on Tuesday in Abuja.

He said that data protection should not only be centered on public sectors, but also on the whole private sector.

He said data protection, privacy and confidentiality were already mentioned in existing laws in various county agencies.

According to him, in the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) Act, 2007, under section 26, there is a form of data protection in which no one is allowed to access the NIMC database without the approval of the commission.

“In the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) Act 2007, Section 6, under Sections J and K, there is a form of data protection under Section A to provide legislation first.

“It is now being incorporated into full-fledged legislation by the National Assembly.

“Under the Nigerian Communications Commission Act 2003, there was no clear mention of data protection.

“The commission has proposed two subsidiary legislations, in which operators are not allowed to access or disclose certain information without the consent of the person concerned.

“National Health Act 2014, there is one form of data protection and many more,” he said.

Earlier, the National Commissioner, NDPB, Vincent Olatunji revealed that the Data Protection Mandate has a strategic roadmap that will be the turning point in the country’s data privacy.

Mr. Olatunji urged stakeholders to provide the office with the necessary support to fulfill its mandate.

The Executive Commissioner, Stakeholder Management, NCC, Adeleke Adewolu in his goodwill message congratulated the NDPB and pledged his support to the commission.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that data protection is a constitutional right based on Section 37 of the 1999 Constitution as amended.

NAN also reports that NDPB is a new parastatal company under the Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy, established in accordance with global best practices.
