Whitfield votes to approve low-income apartment project on Happy Valley Road
The Walker County Council of Commissioners voted 3-2 Thursday night to approve the rezoning of a low-income 156-unit development across from Ridgeland High School.
President Shannon Whitfield broke a 2-2 tie, voting for the rezone.
It was the first time that President Whitfield voted on a decision under the new form of government.
Commissioner Mark Askew and Commissioner Robert Stultz voted in favor. Commissioner Robert Blakemore and Commissioner Brian Hart voted against.
With the property now zoned R-2, the apartment complex project is submitted to the Planning Commission for preliminary platform approval on October 21. After hearing from many opponents of the project, the planning committee previously recommended that it not be approved.
The property on Happy Valley Road was part of the Hutcheson family horse farm. The family promoted the Gateway Development Corporation project.
President Whitfield approved the project earlier, but it was pointed out that the required public hearings had not taken place.
